This article relates to any new cloud VPS plan purchased after December 2023.
You can access the firewall for you VPS under:
- https://cp.blacknighthosting.com > Services > My Services > click on your VPS service > Firewall
Adding a new rule
Click the Add button to add a new rule
Type: leave this to IN for most rules (access OUT is allowed by default, so only set to OUT if you want to restrict access OUT from your VPS)
Action: set this to ACCEPT to allow access in from somewhere, or set it to DROP to block access
Interface: leave as default or blank
Source: blank allows access in from everywhere, for some rules you should put in the IP address or range you want access in from
Destination: leave as blank for your VPS\all IPs
Macro: pick a predefined port & protocol from a list of common applications, or else ignore this to manually put in your port\protocol
Protocol: "6 Transmission Control Protocol" (TCP) is what you will need for the majority of rules
Source Port: Leave blank for the majority of rules
Destination Port: put in the port you want to open, or leave blank for all ports. Use : to specify a range of ports (e.g. 2000:4000)
Comment: We strongly recommend you put in a short comment for the rule in question, to help identify it in the firewall overview screen
Finally press Add to add the rule
Notes on the firewall:
- You can disable\enable a rule by toggling the Enable icon beside the rule in question
- Press the up and down arrows to move a rule to be higher in position (rules will be applied from top down, only applicable really if you have DROP rules)
- We strongly recommend you restrict access from specific IP addresses through some ports like SSH, RDP, MySQL for security reasons.
