Move A Windows Shared Hosting Webspace
Some Items To Consider
- Anything installed through the Web Applications Vault will be deleted, when you click Change Hosting on the domain name (hostname):
- If you have any Site Applications listed on the domain you are moving, you will need to first convert them before proceeding with the Webspace move.
- See the following for more information: Moving an Application Vault install to a Manual Install
- If you have an SSL certificate on the Webspace, you will need to re-install this, on the relevant domain name - in it's new Webspace.
- The Private Key for the SSL certificate.
- The SSL Certificate that was given to you.
- To accomplish this, you will require the following:
- If you are not sure of any of this please contact us.
- Multiple domains in the same webspace have the same FTP details and can be copied in one go:
- i.e. If they have the same webspace ID beside them under Hosted Domains.
- There will be 30 - 60 minutes downtime, from when you hit Change Hosting, as the DNS updates (if the domain is using our nameservers):
- If the domain name is not using our nameservers, you will need to update the DNS records manually - with your nameserver provider, to the new IP that is listed under Website Configuration - on the new Webspace.
- Note: There can be increased downtime under certain situations, where DNS is updating, and as it is an automated process there is little we can do about this - however, you can check with us to see if there are any issues with the DNS update process for the changes you make.
Your Existing Domain and Webspace Settings
For each domain (hostname) listed in the Webspace - that you are moving, you will need to note down some settings.
- Login to your Blacknight Account - which contains the Windows subscription you intend to work on.
- URL: https://cp.blacknight.com
- Find the domain in question:
- Note down the entries beside:
- Location.
- IP Address.
- IP Address Type.
- Access to website through exclusive IP address.
- Subscription
- Home > Hosted Domains > (Your Domain) > Web [Tab].
- You will also need to note down some general settings for the actual Webspace:
[Please see Webspace Notes below - before continuing]- Note entries as follows on each tab:
- General: All items excluding FTP Configuration - you will be using new FTP details, for the new Webspace.
- Performance: All items.
- Logging: All items.
- Default Documents: All items (in order).
- Error Documents: Any items that have been modified, from **IIS Standard Document**.
- MIME Types: Any items under User Defined.
- IIS Application Pool: Any items listed.
- VERY IMPORTANT NOTE
If you have any Site Applications listed here, you will need to first convert them before proceeding with the Webspace move.

Webspace Notes
Item 3 is applicable to all domains in that same Webspace, as such you only need to note down these settings once for the domains your are moving (from that Webspace).
It may well be a case that some of the settings you note down, are only applicable to some of the domains in that Webspace; so if you move some of the domains to their own Webspaces - and don't keep them all together after the move (in a new Webspace), you may only need to set certain settings on the new Webspaces (respective to the domains in them).
The Webspace Move Process
The following steps will instruct you on how to move the contents of a Windows Shared Hosting Webspace to a new Windows Shared Hosting Webspace.
- Login to your Blacknight Account - which contains the Windows subscription you intend to work on.
- URL: https://cp.blacknight.com
- Create a (new) subdomain - for the hostname you are moving, and give it a name which relates to the move e.g: webspacemove.yourdomain.com:
- Home > Hosted Domains > Add New Subdomain.
- Note: You are only adding DNS hosting at this point, as such do not add Website/Email hosting.
- Once you have added the subdomain, you can now add Website hosting - ensuring a new Webspace:
- Hosting: Website (Microsoft IIS)
- Subscription: Choose the subscription you are working on (or another Windows subscription if required).
- Webspace: Ensure you choose Create new webspace.
- Location: Set this to the same Location that you noted down previously.
- If applicable, set the items based on what you noted previously.
- (If prompted) Choose IIS Shared Hosting 2012, then press next.
- Set the items based on what you noted previously.
- Set FTP support, and note down the details you used for this.
- If you no not need to amend anything, click Finish.
- Otherwise, click << Back to amend as required.
- Home > Hosted Domains > (Your Subdomain) > Add Hosting (beside Web Hosting).
- If given an option to choose the type of hosting, and subscription, ensure you choose:
- Click Next, where you should be greeted with a screen showing the following items:
- Click Next - for the Add Web Hosting screen:
- Click Next - for the Add New Webspace screen:
- Click Next - you will be shown a summary of the setup.
- Once the Website hosting has finished setup, you can go ahead and copy your domain's files to the new Webspace:
- You would have noted down the FTP details - for the new Webspace, as part of the setup process.
- If you do not know these, or for the existing Webspace, you can reset the details as per the following: Where do I find my FTP details?
- Note: Multiple domains in the same Webspace have the same FTP details, for that Webspace.
- Note: You should ensure you have a copy of the files, backed up, so you can re-upload
- Should you have had an SSL certificate - on the existing domain, you will need to re-set it in place on the new Webspace:
- See How to install an SSL cert.
- If you are not sure of any of this please contact us.
- Once you are happy that the new Webspace is configured correctly, you can switch the domain to it:
- Hosting: Website (Microsoft IIS)
- Subscription: Choose the subscription you configured the new Webspace to.
- Webspace: Ensure you choose the same Webspace, that you created for the move.
- Location: Set this to the same Location that you noted down previously - for the existing domain.
- Home > Hosted Domains > (Your Domain) > Web [Tab] > Change Hosting.
-
If given an option to choose the type of hosting, and subscription, ensure you choose:
- Click Next, where you should be greeted with a screen showing the following items:
- Click Next, and continue to do so until you can Finish the process.
At this point, assuming the domain is using our nameservers - and once DNS propagates, you have completed the move:
- You should check the website, in the new Webspace location, to ensure it loads correctly.
- Note: You may need to make slight configuration/coding changes on the website, to suit the new location.
