Changing PHP version

The method to change the PHP version for your website depends on the type of plan you are on. Please scroll down to the relevant section for your hosting plan.  Please see the end of the article for what PHP versions we support.

New Shared Hosting

On newer plans managed through https://cp.blacknighthosting.com you can change the PHP version under:

Mega\Giga\Tera (Plesk) plans:

• Go to Services >> My Services
• Click on the Website Hosting - MEGA/GIGA/TERA (Plesk) plan
• Under One Click Login, click to log into Plesk
• Click on the domain in question, it should expand, showing various options.
• Find Dev Tools and click on PHP
• The very first option is PHP support (PHP version), choose the new PHP version here.
• Scroll all the way to the bottom and click Apply.
• You have now updated the PHP version for this site.
  • On GIGA and TERA plans, repeat these steps for your other websites.

Wordpress (cPanel) plans:

• Go to Services >> My Services
• Click on the Website Hosting - Wordpress (cPanel) plan
• Under One Click Login, click to log into cPanel
• Scroll down until you find the Software section, and click MultiPHP Manager
• Check the box beside the domain name, select the desired PHP version via the drop-down on the right, and click Apply

Legacy Shared Hosting

On older plans (pre-2022) managed through https://cp.blacknight.com you can change the PHP version under:

• Click the Websites tab at the top

  If you do not see a Websites tab, ensure that you have the Linux Minimus/Medius/Maximus subscription selected from the drop-down on the top-right under your name.

• Click on the domain name in question.
• Click Website Configuration
• Click Edit at the bottom
• Find PHP Implementation and choose the new PHP version.

  • IMPORTANT: The maximum PHP version on this plan is 8.1. If you require 8.2 or above, you will need to migrate to a MEGA/GIGA/TERA/WordPress plan.

    NOTE: If you do not see PHP 7.4 or above in this list, please email help@blacknight.com with your domain name, asking us to make them available.

• Click Submit.
• You have now updated the PHP version for this site.
  • You will need to repeat these steps for your other websites.

The following PHP versions are available:

Legacy shared hosting plans only | cp.blacknight.com:

• PHP 5.3; 5.4; 5.5; 5.6
• PHP 7.0; 7.1; 7.2; 7.3; 7.4
• PHP 8.0; 8.1

Our new shared hosting plans | cp.blacknighthosting.com:

• PHP 7.3; 7.4
• PHP 8.0; 8.1; 8.2; 8.3; 8.4

Some Notes

• PHP 7.3 and onwards are the only versions available on our newer plans; PHP versions older than PHP 7.3 are not available on our Mega, Giga, Tera, or Wordpress plans.
• It is recommended to skip PHP 8.0 as many vendors did not make updates for modules for this version and as such it is missing a number of common modules that a great deal of websites use.
• Minor versions eg. 7.1.xx will differ from server to server.
